English is everything, isn’t it?

It can’t be denied that nowadays English is the most popular language in the world. It has been used in all fields of the social activities. People speak English everywhere and a lot of books in diverse subjects such as science, technology, tourism, economy, theological, education have been written in English. Of course, paticipate and becoming a Priest in Society of Jesus, you need English to study and communicate with otherJesuits from all around the world. English is a useful instrument for Jesuits to serve the Lord.

In fact, every candidate of Society of Jesus needs English in studying. Many kinds of book in the world are written in English so if you have good reading skill, you can grab them easily. With that skill, you can study abroad and learn anything you like. So, you are a person who wants to travel around the world alone. If you are a locomotive person, English will help you to communicate with most if people in the world and you will never feel like a fish out of water. Not only does English help you in researching, but it is also a helpful equipment to get to know other cultures and people. Knowledge about those things makes you have good understanding about others so that you can serve the Lord everywhere in everyone. In the candidate house, your English is good, you get into JB class more easily. But English is everything, isn’t it?.

After my personal prayer time, I got an answer from God to the question above. God told me that: “English isn’t everything for your vocation, so you shounldn’t put it in top position”

Sometimes I see some candidates comment about the English skill of other brothers. Speaking English in life is a good thing but it is not everything. It’s very easy to make other people feel uncomfortable if you speak English to them when they don’t really want to. I think that English is not more important than Spiritual or humanity. If you have a great love with Jesus, you will realize that learning English is not a burden. If you have a good relationship with all members in your community, you will know the suitable time to speak English. Learning English is an indispensable requirement in Society of Jesus. Learning by English is an international trend but it is just the fifth priority after spiritual, humanity, community and apostolic work.

I want to share with you my opinion that English is not everything, so you don’t make it the key of your vocation. You get into Candidate House to reply the call of God. It is not mean that you must learn English all the time and disregard other aspects of spiritual life. It is important thing that everyone needs to understand and improve. When you pray well, have good relationship in your community, finding God in everything and thirsting for Love’s God, I believe that you can be a Priest of SJ and English is an instrument that helps you serve everyone around the world. If you want to learn English well, you need to pray more. When you pray to God constantly, He will teach you the way to learn English better and better.

So, please remember: “English is not everything” because only God is everything.
